Steam punk is a sub-genre of Science fiction, that is very hard to describe. You get the sense that the stories are set in an earlier period in history, but ... not exactly. History may be made up or technologies don't match the time period. The online dictionary Urbandictionary.com has the best explanation of what steam punk is "what the past would look like if the future had happened sooner". Some authors that would be considered steam punk geared to young adults are: His Dark Marterials Trilogy by Phillip Pullman, Sally Lockhart Mysteries by Phillip Pullman, Parasol Protectorate Series by Gail Carriger and the Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare.
