The Water is Wide by Pat Conroy

Pat Conroy spent a year living and teaching on a  tiny isolated Yamacraw Island of the coast of South Carolina in 1969. In the book The Water is Wide, Conroy writes a compelling account of himself as young idealistic teacher attempting to teach on an island that suffers from educational and ecological neglect.  This is a powerful story about the people living in isolation from the rest of the world on Yamacraw Island. This is a beautiful and insightful story!

I love the downloadable books!
My little MP3 player and I travel everywhere together. I can always have at least three books with me anywhere I go. There are so many really good books to enjoy. For more information click here!
I recently listened to A Voyage Long and Strange by Tony Horowitz.
It is a wonderful book that aims to study the beginnings of America from the period
of Christopher Columbus up to the time of the Pilgrims. The author travels around
the country (and beyond) in search of the truth about this period in American history,as well as uncovering modern day interpretations of history and the regional celebrations that grew out of those beliefs.It is a enjoyable mix of history, sociology and a long road trip that is an entertaining and fascinating ride through history.

Great new book!

Loot: The Battle over the Stolen Treasures of the Ancient World by Wendy Waxman is a book that the staff has been very excited about in recent weeks. Several of us were reading it at the same time!
It is about the controversy surrounding the ownership of ancient artifacts. There are many well known artifacts from many nations such as Egypt, Greece and Turkey which were taken out of those countries and are currently residing in famous western museums in the United States, England, France and Germany.
This book discusses the history surrounding the pieces, how they were removed from their places of origin, and why they have not been returned. The author analyzes the issues surrounding the controversy in great detail, and interviews scholars and curators on both sides of the issue. It is a fascinating subject, and an excellent book!

One of my favorite books this year was The Solitude of Thomas Cave by Georgina Harding. It is a beautifully written book about a man who bets his fellow whalers that he can spend a winter alone on an artic island.

While it is about how he survives in the wild physically, it is a study about how he reflects about his life. I really enjoyed it!
